What is a "Daruma"? (The Spirit of Resilience) A Daruma is more than just a doll; it is a Japanese "wish-making" talisman modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. With its round shape, it is designed to tip over and get back up—symbolizing the philosophical spirit of "Nanakorobi Yaoki" (Fall seven times, stand up eight). It’s a powerful reminder to keep moving forward with a positive mindset! Gunma: The Heart of Daruma Did you know that 80% of Japan’s Daruma are made right here in Gunma? Specifically, Takasaki city is the birthplace of the "Fortune Daruma." We will visit a historic temple where thousands of these colorful figures gather, creating a view you won't see anywhere else in Japan. The Experience: Create Your Own Masterpiece At our workshop, you will paint your own Daruma! The Design: Traditionally, the eyebrows represent Cranes and the cheeks represent Turtles—both symbols of long life in Japan. Make it Yours: You can follow tradition or get creative with your own colors and expressions! My daughters (14 and 11) love seeing the unique faces our guests create. Make a Wish: Once finished, you paint the left eye while making a wish. When your dream comes true, you paint the right eye to say "Thank you!" Extra Sweet Treat: "Yaki-Manju" Experience If time allows, I’ll take you to try Yaki-Manju. This is Gunma’s soul food: fluffy steamed buns skewered and grilled over charcoal with a sweet and savory miso glaze. The aroma alone is unforgettable! It’s the perfect way to taste the local history of my hometown.

It’s full of fun activities and creative spaces that little builders will really enjoy. After all the fun, we’ll go to one of our favorite family-friendly restaurants for dinner. We’re planning to have kushikatsu (Japanese-style skewers), but if you have any dietary requirements, just let us know — we’re happy to find a place that works for everyone. We’re really looking forward to spending the day with families whose kids love LEGO as much as ours do!
